Harry Enfield stars once again in a brand new full-cast dramatisation of Douglas Adams´s second Dirk Gently novel, directed by the award-winning Dirk Maggs Harry Enfield exuberantly returns as Dirk Gently, who, fallen on hard times and dressed as a gypsy woman, is using his irritatingly accurate clairvoyant powers to read palms. He is saved when a frantic client turns up with a ludicrous story about being stalked by a goblin waving a contract accompanied by a hairy, green-eyed, scythe-wielding monster. When Detective Superintendent Gilks decides a headless body found in a sealed room is the result of a particularly irritating suicide, Dirk is plunged into a mystery where the interconnectedness of all things is tested to the limit... This is the second of three series adapted from the Dirk Gently books, directed by Dirk Maggs (chosen by Douglas Adams to conclude the award-winning Hitchhiker´s Guide To The Galaxy). Guest stars include Peter Davison (Doctor Who), Jan Ravens (Dead Ringers), Philip Jackson (Poirot), John Fortune (Bremner, Bird & Fortune), Morwenna Banks (Absolutely), Stephen Moore (The Hitchhiker´s Guide To The Galaxy) and returning cast members Olivia Colman (Peep Show), Jim Carter (The Golden Compass) and Billy Boyd (The Lord Of The Rings). On this archival edition of Fresh Air, playwright and satirist from South Africa Pieter Dirk-Uys, and writer and director Todd Haynes. Dirk-Uys has a television talk show in South Africa that has an unusual twist. Instead of hosting his show as himself, he dresses drag as an Afrikaner dowager named Evita. His guests include such leaders as Nelson Mandela. His show is said to be ´´a way of making the country´s leaders seem more human.´´ And Haynes made his directing debut in 1988 with Superstar. His first feature film, Poison, won the Grand Jury Prize Award at the Sundance Film Festival in 1991. The film was partly funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and created a controversy because of its adult themes. His latest project, Safe, is a modern horror film about environmental pollution. (Original Broadcast Date: June 28, 1995) 1. Language: English. Narrator: Terry Gross. Simon Jones, who played Arthur Dent in The Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Galaxy, presents a look back at the life and work of a writer who has captivated the imagination of millions. When Douglas Adams created The Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Galaxy for BBC Radio 4, it was the genesis of a science fiction comedy legend. Yet his career at the BBC had begun in Light Entertainment, with contributions to The Burkiss Way, Week Ending, and other sketch shows of the time. He went on to script edit a series of Doctor Who, and to write a series of Hitchhiker and Dirk Gently books. In programme, Simon Jones takes an A-Z look at Douglas Adams´s career, taking in extracts from the many radio and TV programmes he contributed to. These include personal appearances on Wogan, Tomorrow´s World, and Desert Island Discs, his own radio programmes such as Last Chance to See (about the search for endangered species) and The Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Future (a look at impending technology), and even a ´lost´ segment of The Hitchhiker´s Guide to the Galaxy which Adams wrote specially for Radio 4´s Steafel Plus in 1982. Also included are some of the many tributes paid to Adams following his untimely death in May 2001. This is a fascinating and in-depth audio biography of a man whose brilliant work has inspired, enraptured, and entertained millions of people worldwide. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Simon Jones.
